About a Hundred Bibles on the Moon
About a hundred Bibles made the trip to the Moon.
The year was 1971, during the Apollo 14 mission. Astronaut Edgar Mitchell walked on the Moon carrying about a hundred Bibles.
These were obviously not the bound copies we're familiar with, but miniaturized versions on microfilm. Each Bible was printed on a 2.5 cm by 2.5 cm microfilm and contained the full text. One of these copies sold for over $50,000.
This initiative came from John M. Stout, a NASA engineer and chaplain who was deeply affected by the fire that destroyed the Apollo 1 spacecraft.
Following this tragedy, he wanted to bring more religion into NASA. He then founded the Apollo Prayer League, a prayer group for astronauts, whose mission became sending Bibles to the Moon.
