Metal in a Microwave: Yes, But...

It is possible to put certain metal objects in a microwave without danger. The risk doesn't come from the metal itself, but from its shape and finish.

Microwaves cause an electrical current to flow across the surface of metallic objects.

If the object has points, sharp corners, or rough edges (for example, a fork, crumpled aluminum foil, etc.), the energy concentrates at those spots, creating what is called the "point effect." This can lead to the formation of electric arcs (sparks), which can damage the microwave or start a fire.

Conversely, a smooth metal object without rough edges, such as certain trays or containers specifically designed for microwave use, can sometimes be used safely if the appliance's manual and the manufacturer's instructions allow it.
