Pikachu Causes Epileptic Seizures
On December 16, 1997, in Japan, an episode of the Pokémon anime broadcast on television triggered a series of photosensitive epileptic seizures among viewers.
The episode in question was called "Dennō Senshi Porygon," which translates to "Virtual Soldier Porygon."
It was episode 38 of the first season of Pokémon.
The episode featured a highly luminous and flashing sequence during a scene where the main characters were transported inside a computer. This rapid sequence of flashing lights caused epileptic seizures in numerous children.
Following this incident, more than 600 children were admitted to hospitals, and several of them were diagnosed with what was called "Pokémon episode syndrome."
In response to these events, the Pokémon show was suspended in Japan for several months, and stricter warnings were put in place for flashing sequences in television broadcasts.
