When a Ski Jumper Outflew a Plane
In 1951, during a ski jumping competition in Planica, Slovenia, Norwegian Narve Bonna pulled off a feat that defied aerodynamics.
His jump reached 130 meters, setting a world record. But that wasn’t all—mid-flight, he overtook a tourist plane flying low over the slope.
Spectators watched as the skier skimmed past the plane’s wings before landing safely. The Piper J-3 Cub was cruising at around 120 km/h, while Bonna hit nearly 140 km/h on his descent.
The record stood for three years, until the FIS banned jumps beyond 120 meters for safety reasons.
